What is unique about being a special education teacher at GPS?

Our special education teacher will be an extraordinary educator that works hard, is reflective, and is committed to getting better every day. Each day you will be fostering an environment of creative problem solving, innovation, and teaching students to become self-directed learners who take ownership over their learning and ultimately their lives. A growth mindset is a core belief for teaching and learning at GPS. Teaching at GPS is a team sport, and thus collaboration is key. We are building a school that brings out the best in each and every child. This is a unique opportunity for a special education teacher to build a world class program from the ground up. You will collaborate with our general education teachers and the school leadership team to build a program that truly puts children at the center and holds high expectations for all. You will build strong relationships with students and know what motivates them and what they need academically and emotionally. You will teach students to set goals and conduct 1-1 check-ins to guide them to become their greatest selves in the long term and to work toward their goals and aspirations in the short term. We believe that special education needs to be reformed and we are looking for a professional who is ready to embark upon the challenge with us to build an amazing program. You will be flexible and adaptable as we build the systems and structures to ultimately meet our long term mission and vision.

GPS Teachers:

• Encourage a culture of mutual respect and equitable practice
• Exhibit knowledge of student cognitive development and various learning styles
• Communicate effectively with students and families about classroom activities and student progress
• Demonstrate content knowledge, including the California Common Core Standards
• Set high academic achievement expectations
• Identify and support students’ social, emotional, and behavior learning needs
• Implement Project-Based Learning techniques and strategies
• Facilitate and design effective group work
• Provide timely feedback and collaborate with faculty to offer specialized support
• Foster student growth through semi-annual Student Conferences and Presentations of Learning
• Collaborate with pod level teams in regular formal and informal meetings
• Serve as a family group mentor to approximately 14 students and meet with them 1-2 times per day
• Use data to personalize learning for each student
• Showcase student work within the community
• Scaffold instructional activities that facilitate engaging and appropriate learning opportunities
• Personalize instruction based on feedback, needs, and learning levels
• Create relevant and authentic learning experiences
• Plan backwards designed lessons that align all activities and assessments
• Design formal and informal assessments that measure student progress

Qualifications (Required):

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree
• Valid California Credential
• DOJ Fingerprint Clearance
• TB Clearance

Compensation

The compensation for this role is competitive and commensurate with experience.
